How to Build Simple, Inexpensive Narrow Raised Beds for Any Garden

Raised beds don't have to be expensive or complicated. With just a few readily available materials, you can build sturdy, attractive narrow beds that are perfect for vegetables, herbs, flowers, strawberries, pollinator plants, and even specialty crops like comfrey.
One of the things we love most about this design is how inexpensive it is to build. Better yet, most lumber yards will even cut the boards to size for you, making this a great project for beginners who don't own a saw.
Why Narrow Raised Beds?
These beds are intentionally narrower than traditional raised beds, offering several advantages:
Easier to reach from either side
Uses less soil than wider beds
Great drainage
Attractive modern appearance
Perfect for smaller yards
Simple construction with minimal materials
They work well for almost anything you want to grow, including:
Herbs
Lettuce
Spinach
Garlic
Onions

We're currently using ours for a comfrey root-growing experiment, but the design can easily be adapted for countless other crops.
Materials Needed (Per 8-Foot Bed)
Each bed requires:
3 – 2×6×24-inch boards
2 – 24-inch × 8-foot corrugated roofing panels
2 – 3-foot metal garden stakes
Self-tapping screws
That's all you need.
Since the boards are only 24 inches long, many lumber yards will cut them while you're there, making assembly even easier.
Step 1: Build the Frame
Install one 24-inch board at each end of the bed and one directly in the center.
The center support is important because it prevents the long metal panels from bowing outward once the bed is filled with soil.
Step 2: Attach the Corrugated Panels
Position one roofing panel on each side of the supports.
Fasten the panels using self-tapping screws.
Important Tip
Place one screw in every valley (the low point) of the corrugated panel where it contacts each support board.
Although it uses a few more screws, this creates a much tighter seal and helps prevent soil from washing out through small gaps.
It also makes the finished bed much stronger.



Step 3: Install the Garden Stakes
Drive one 3-foot garden stake into the ground beside each end support.
Screw the stakes directly to the wooden end boards.
These stakes provide excellent stability and help prevent strong winds from pushing the beds over.
Step 4: Fill With Soil
Fill the bed with your preferred garden soil or raised bed mix.
Because these beds are relatively narrow, they require much less soil than traditional raised beds, helping keep costs down.
Endless Growing Possibilities
We've planted ours with comfrey because we're testing an easier method for growing and harvesting roots, but these beds could be used for almost anything.
They would make excellent beds for:
Kitchen herb gardens
Salad greens
Cut flowers
Pollinator plants
Berry plants
Garlic and onions
Medicinal herb collections
Children's gardens
The simple design also makes them easy to expand as your garden grows.
