An Experiment in Growing Comfrey Roots Without Digging

At Evans Organics, we're always looking for better ways to grow healthier herbs while making harvesting more efficient. This season, we've started an experiment that we're excited to share, and so far, the results have been very encouraging.

Why We Started This Experiment

Anyone who has harvested mature comfrey roots knows it's hard work. Comfrey develops a deep, extensive root system, and digging those roots from the ground can be time-consuming and physically demanding.

We wondered:

Could we grow large, healthy comfrey roots in long, narrow raised beds and harvest them simply by removing one side of the bed instead of digging?

That's exactly what we're trying to find out.

Building the Raised Beds

Instead of planting directly in the ground, we built several long, narrow raised beds using corrugated metal panels.

The narrow design serves two purposes:

• It encourages the roots to develop within a contained growing area.

• It allows us to remove a side panel later, giving us direct access to the root system.

The goal is to make harvesting faster, easier, and less disruptive to both the plants and the soil.

A Productive First Season

So far, the experiment has exceeded our expectations.

The comfrey plants have established themselves quickly and produced an abundance of healthy leaves throughout the summer.

We've already enjoyed several leaf harvests while allowing the plants to continue building strong root systems beneath the soil.

Healthy leaves are often a good indication that the roots are developing well, so we're optimistic about what lies below the surface.

Preparing for Winter

Rather than leaving the raised beds standing through the winter, the plan is a little different.

Later this fall we intend to:

• Lay each raised bed flat on the ground.

• Cover the beds with a generous layer of fallen leaves.

• Allow the leaf mulch to insulate the soil and help protect the roots during freezing winter temperatures.

This natural blanket should help moderate temperature swings while allowing the plants to rest until spring.

The Big Test Next Spring

The exciting part comes next year.

Once spring arrives, we'll remove one side panel from each raised bed and carefully expose the root system.

If everything goes according to plan, we'll be able to harvest mature comfrey roots without digging them from the ground.

We're hoping this method will produce:

• Larger roots

• Cleaner harvests

• Less labor

• Less disturbance to surrounding soil

• Easier division of healthy root cuttings

If successful, this could become our preferred method for producing high-quality comfrey roots for propagation and for customers looking to start their own comfrey patches.

Why This Matters

At Evans Organics, we believe growing herbs is a continual learning process.

Every season teaches us something new, and we're always looking for ways to improve the quality of our plants while using practical, sustainable growing methods.

Sometimes the best ideas come from simply asking:

"Is there an easier way?"

This experiment is one of those ideas.
