The Proper Way to Dry Herbs: The Evans Organics Method

When it comes to herbal products, quality doesn't begin in the package—it begins the moment the plant is harvested. Every step between harvest and packaging affects the herb's freshness, appearance, aroma, and overall quality.

At Evans Organics, we believe that taking shortcuts during the drying process can compromise the final product. That's why we've developed a careful, small-batch approach that focuses on protecting our herbs from unnecessary exposure while preserving their natural characteristics.

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how we dry our herbs and why we believe this process makes a difference.

It Starts with Small-Batch Harvesting

We don't believe in harvesting massive amounts of herbs all at once.

Instead, we harvest in small batches, allowing us to carefully monitor each harvest from start to finish. Smaller harvests mean the herbs can be processed more quickly and receive the attention they deserve.

This approach also allows us to inspect every batch before drying, removing damaged or undesirable plant material and ensuring only quality herbs move forward in the process.

For us, quality always comes before quantity.

Drying Indoors to Protect the Herb

One of the biggest differences in our process is where we dry our herbs.

Many herbs are traditionally dried outdoors or in areas where they're exposed to sunlight. While this can work, direct sunlight also exposes herbs to UV rays, which can gradually affect their natural color and aromatic compounds.

At Evans Organics, our herbs are dried indoors, away from direct sunlight and UV exposure.

Indoor drying also helps protect our herbs from:

  • Dust and airborne debris

  • Insects and pests

  • Rain and changing weather

  • Outdoor contaminants

By drying indoors in a controlled environment, we can focus on consistency and cleanliness throughout the drying process.

Drying Herbs

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Drying herbs isn't about getting them finished as quickly as possible.

Removing moisture too rapidly or exposing herbs to excessive heat can reduce the quality of the finished product. That's why we prefer a patient approach.

Our herbs are allowed to dry gradually until they reach the proper level of dryness. The goal is to remove enough moisture for proper storage while maintaining the herb's natural appearance and structure.

Every batch is monitored throughout the drying process rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all timeline.

Protecting Quality After Drying

The drying process doesn't end when the herbs leave the drying racks.

Once our herbs are fully dried, they are packaged promptly to help protect them from their biggest enemies:

  • Light

  • Air

  • Moisture

To accomplish this, we package our herbs in high-quality silver Mylar bags.

Mylar provides an excellent barrier against light and moisture, helping preserve freshness during storage. Unlike clear packaging, solid silver Mylar helps keep light away from the product, which is especially important for long-term storage.

Every Package Includes the Harvest Date

Freshness matters.

That's why every Evans Organics package includes the harvest date on the label.

Rather than wondering how old an herb may be, you'll know exactly when it was harvested. We believe this level of transparency helps customers make informed purchasing decisions and reflects our commitment to quality.

Why Our Process Matters

At Evans Organics, we don't believe quality comes from one single step.

It's the result of every decision we make:

  • Harvesting in small batches

  • Drying indoors with no UV exposure

  • Protecting herbs from pests and outdoor contaminants

  • Allowing herbs to dry carefully rather than rushing the process

  • Packaging in silver Mylar bags for protection from light, air, and moisture

  • Clearly labeling every package with the harvest date

These practices help us maintain the high standards we strive for with every batch we produce.
